FIFA World Cup 2026 — Group Stage & Knockout Bracket

What is the FIFA World Cup 2026 Simulator?

This is a free, interactive simulator for the FIFA World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July 2026. The 2026 tournament is the most expansive in World Cup history — featuring 48 nations across 12 groups, 104 matches over 39 days, and 16 venues spread across three countries.

The simulator lets you predict every group stage result, instantly recalculates standings using official FIFA tiebreaker rules, tracks which eight third-place teams qualify for the knockout stage, and builds the complete bracket all the way to the Final. It is designed for football fans who want to explore different tournament scenarios, test their predictions, and share their forecasts with friends.

The 2026 World Cup Format

The 2026 FIFA World Cup introduces the largest format in the competition's history. Forty-eight teams are divided into 12 groups of four, labelled A through L. Each team plays three group stage matches — once against each opponent in their group.

After the group stage, 32 teams advance to a single-elimination knockout bracket:

  • The top two teams from each of the 12 groups — 24 teams in total — advance automatically
  • The 8 best third-place teams across all 12 groups also advance, bringing the total to 32
  • The fourth-place team in every group is eliminated

The knockout stage runs from the Round of 32 through to the Final on 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

How the Simulator Works

To simulate the group stage, click on any group card on the homepage. On the group page, you will see the six matches in that group across three matchdays. Enter a score for any match by clicking the score input fields and typing the number of goals. The standings table updates instantly as you type — no need to confirm or save.

As you enter results, the simulator automatically:

  • Recalculates group standings using official FIFA tiebreaker rules
  • Updates the Best Third-Place Teams ranking table on the homepage
  • Populates the knockout bracket with qualifying teams

Your entered results are saved automatically in your browser's local storage, so they persist across page navigation and browser sessions. Use the Share Simulation button to generate a permanent shareable link encoding all your results.

Official FIFA Tiebreaker Rules

When two or more teams are equal on points in the group stage, FIFA applies tiebreakers in the following order:

  1. Points — 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss
  2. Goal difference — goals scored minus goals conceded across all group matches
  3. Goals scored — total goals scored across all group matches
  4. Head-to-head points — points earned in matches between the tied teams only
  5. Head-to-head goal difference — goal difference in matches between tied teams only
  6. Head-to-head goals scored — goals scored in matches between tied teams only
  7. Fair play conduct (yellow/red cards) — only applied at the actual tournament
  8. Drawing of lots — the final tiebreaker at the actual tournament

The simulator applies rules 1 through 6 automatically. This covers the vast majority of real-world tiebreaking situations. Fair play and drawing of lots are applied by FIFA officials at the actual tournament and are not simulated here.

Third-Place Qualification System

The third-place qualification system in the 2026 World Cup is one of its most distinctive features. With 12 groups, there are 12 third-place teams — but only the 8 best advance to the Round of 32.

The 12 third-place teams are ranked using the same criteria as the group stage: points, goal difference, goals scored, and head-to-head record (where applicable). The simulator's Best Third-Place Teams table on the homepage shows all 12 current third-place finishers ranked, with the top 8 highlighted as qualifying.

Once the 8 qualifying third-place teams are determined, FIFA's official Annex C rules assign each qualifying team to a specific bracket slot in the Round of 32. These rules depend on which specific groups the qualifying third-place teams came from, ensuring a balanced draw. This simulator applies the Annex C bracket placement automatically.

The Knockout Stage

Once group stage results are entered, the Round of 32 bracket populates automatically. You can then simulate every knockout match by clicking the team you predict to win.

In the knockout stage, there are no draws. If a match is level after 90 minutes, it goes to extra time (two 15-minute periods) and, if still level, a penalty shootout. In the simulator, simply click the team you predict to advance — whether through regular time, extra time, or on penalties.

The bracket continues through the Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and Final. The Third-place match between the two semi-final losers is also included.

Sharing Your Prediction

The Share Simulation button on the homepage generates a unique link that encodes all your entered results. When someone opens the link, they see the simulation in exactly the state you set it up — including all group stage scores, standings, and knockout bracket selections.

This feature is designed for prediction competitions, office sweepstakes, and comparing forecasts with friends before and during the tournament.
