Tournament Overview
The 2026 FIFA World Cup introduces the largest format in tournament history — 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four. With 104 matches across 39 days, it is the first World Cup to use this expanded structure, adding a Round of 32 before the familiar Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and Final.
The United States, Canada, and Mexico jointly host the tournament across 16 stadiums in 16 cities — the first World Cup shared by three nations. Iconic venues include the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey, and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, with matches spread coast to coast across North America.
The group stage runs from 11 June to 27 June 2026, followed by the Round of 32 (late June), Round of 16 (early July), Quarter-finals (5–6 July), Semi-finals (9–10 July), the Third-place match (13 July), and the Final on 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
All six FIFA confederations are represented: UEFA (Europe) sends the most teams with 16 places, followed by CAF (Africa) with 9, CONMEBOL (South America) with 6, AFC (Asia) with 8, CONCACAF (North/Central America) with 6, and OFC (Oceania) with 1. The three host nations — USA, Canada, and Mexico — qualified automatically through their respective confederations.

Unlike previous World Cups, the 2026 edition has 12 groups — so alongside the 24 automatic qualifiers (top 2 per group), the 8 best third-place teams from all 12 groups also advance. This creates a unique dynamic where finishing third is not necessarily fatal. FIFA's Annex C rules then determine which bracket slot each qualifying third-place team occupies in the Round of 32.
